What is Samseonghyeol?

Samseonghyeol is one of the oldest historic sites on Jeju Island and a historic landmark located in central Jeju City. It is a special place where you can discover the roots and mythology of Jeju, as it holds the legend that the founders of the Go, Yang, and Bu clans emerged from the ground here.

Legend and history

• The myth connected to Samseonghyeol begins with the founding story of Tamna, the old name of Jeju Island. In ancient times, it is said that three divine figures, Yang Eulna, Go Eulna, and Bu Eulna, rose from this land filled with the sacred energy of Hallasan.
• The three divine figures later married three princesses from Byeokrang and began farming and livestock raising, founding the kingdom of Tamna.
• Samseonghyeol still has three mysterious holes that are said not to fill with water even after heavy rain, and not to collect snow even when it snows.
