The Story and History of Naksansa

• Naksansa is a thousand-year-old temple located at 100 Naksansa-ro, Ganghyeon-myeon, Yangyang-gun, Gangwon-do. It is a deeply historic temple founded in 671 during the Unified Silla period by the monk Uisang.
• With its unique setting on a seaside cliff, it is also known as one of Korea's three major Avalokitesvara sacred sites, and for many years it has been a famous place where people come to make wishes.
• The mountain where the temple is located, called Naksan, is said to be named after Mount Potalaka in India, where Avalokitesvara is believed to dwell. According to legend, Uisang founded the temple after meeting Avalokitesvara through prayer in a cave by the East Sea.
• Although it has been damaged and restored repeatedly through fires and wars, it still preserves its beautiful appearance today.

Must-See Spots at Naksansa

• Haesu Gwaneum Statue: This majestic 16 m-tall Buddhist statue is a wonderful place to admire with your kids while making a wish. If you go up to the top, you can enjoy views of the East Sea.
• Uisangdae: This pavilion on a cliff offers a sweeping view of the East Sea and is also famous as a sunrise spot. You can take in the spectacular scenery where the sea and mountains come together.
• Hongnyeonam: This is a small hermitage overlooking the sea. The sight of the cliffs and waves together is especially striking.
• Seven-Story Stone Pagoda: This historic treasure is a great place to feel the depth of the temple's long history.
• Other pavilions and halls inside the temple grounds, such as Hongyemun Gate, Sacheonwangmun Gate, and Baniiru Pavilion, each hold their own stories and spark children's curiosity.

• Admission is free, so you can visit comfortably.
• Getting around the temple is relatively gentle, and there are posted signs, rest areas, and gardens throughout, making it a nice place for a slow walk while enjoying the scenery.
• On the "Path Where Dreams Come True," you can build a wish stone tower with your child and make special memories.
• Each person can ring the bell once, and kids really love this experience.
• The nursing room is on the right after passing Sacheonwangmun Gate.
• As the temple is protected as a cultural heritage site, pets are restricted from entering.
• There are two parking lots: Uisangdae Parking Lot and Geoneomul Sokcho Direct Market Parking Lot. Parking is a flat 4,000 won regardless of time. When entering the grounds, it can also be a good option to park near the surrounding beach and walk over.
• You can bring strollers and children's bicycles up with you, and wheelchair rental is available, so families visiting with strollers can use the site comfortably.
