A Walk Through Gomosanseong, Filled with the Spirit of Silla History

Overview of Gomosanseong

Gomosanseong is a representative Silla mountain fortress from the Three Kingdoms period, located in Sinhyeon-ri, Maseong-myeon, Mungyeong-si, Gyeongsangbuk-do. Built with stone along the mountain ridge, this fortress stretches about 1,300 m in circumference and is the largest remaining mountain fortress in the Mungyeong area. During the Three Kingdoms period, it served as a key military stronghold for Silla's expansion into the Hangang River basin and for defending against Goguryeo's southward advance. Later, it also became the setting for various historical events, including the Joseon period and the Korean War.

Traces of History and Culture

• It is believed to have been built by Silla around the 5th century and was an important military and transportation hub at the time.
• Inside the fortress, you can still find stone piles used in battle, remains of fortress gates in the architectural style of the time, and drainage facilities.
• Traces of historic battles, including the Imjin War and late Joseon militia resistance, remain here, giving the site deep patriotic significance.
• About 70 ancient tombs from the Three Kingdoms period are scattered nearby, so you can enjoy a walk with your kids while experiencing the culture of different eras.

Walking With Kids

• The walking trail is lined with dense pine forest, and the path is gentle enough for a walk with children.
• If you park at Omija Theme Tunnel or Jinnam Rest Area, it takes about 10 minutes to walk slowly to the south gate of Gomosanseong.
• Along the way, there are stone pillar benches and photo spots such as the south gate and fortress walls, so families can take a comfortable break.

Views and Experiences at Gomosanseong

• The wide-open view of the Yeonggang River and Mungyeong from the fortress is well known for its beauty.
• As you walk along the fortress, you will come across Jando Trail, also called Tokkibiri, where you can step onto rock formations above the cliff and enjoy a unique view.
• Nearby, you can also visit various cultural heritage sites such as Seokhyeonseong, Jinnamnu, and Seonghwangdang, where history and nature come together.

• Parking and amenities: Free parking is available at Omija Theme Tunnel or Jinnam Rest Area, and restrooms are located nearby.
  There is a restroom only at the parking lot entrance, so it is a good idea to use it before heading up.

• It is also an excellent observatory where you can take in the spectacular scenery of Jinnamgyoban, one of the Eight Scenic Views of Gyeongbuk, at a glance.
