Located at 59 Ujeongguk-ro, Jongno-gu, Seoul, Ujeongchongguk was the first modern post office in Korea and the starting point of postal service in the Republic of Korea. When you visit with your family and kids, it is a meaningful place where you can experience Korea's modern history in an easy and vivid way.

What is Ujeongchongguk?

• Established in 1884 by order of King Gojong, Ujeongchongguk was the first official post office in Korea.
• Hong Yeong-sik was appointed as the first director, and domestic and international postal services began for the first time in places such as Seoul and Incheon.
• The first stamps were also issued here, making it the origin of the postal system we use today.

The historical significance of Ujeongchongguk

• Ujeongchongguk was established during the late Joseon period as Korea opened its doors, and it stands as a historic site where Western-style administrative systems and communication methods were introduced.
• On December 4, 1884, the famous Gapsin Coup broke out during the celebration banquet for the opening of Ujeongchongguk, and postal operations were temporarily suspended.
• It later became the setting for various historical events, and today it is designated as Historic Site No. 213 as a modern architectural heritage site of the Republic of Korea.

Architecture and exhibits

• The Ujeongchongguk building was constructed on the former site of Jeonuigam, a medical institution from the Joseon period, and its appearance harmoniously blends the charm of a traditional hanok with modern elements.
• The exterior is striking, with the Ujeongchongguk signboard facing the front, a hipped-and-gabled roof, and colorful traditional decorative painting.
• Inside, you will find historical artifacts related to Ujeongchongguk, old photographs, and a photo of the first director Hong Yeong-sik, making it a great place to look around with your kids and talk together.

• Nearby information: The Buddhist Central Museum is located behind the site and is nice to visit together, and you will need to use nearby paid parking lots.
