A special museum tucked into the mountain countryside of Hoengseong, Gangwon

In a quiet forest in Ucheon-myeon, Hoengseong-gun, Gangwon State, Birch Forest Museum of Art is a nature-friendly museum spread across about 33,000 square meters, surrounded by more than 10,000 birch trees. Planting began in 1991 with around 12,000 birch saplings, and after many years of devoted care, the museum officially opened in 2004, becoming a unique place where nature and art come together.

Layout and highlights

Indoor and outdoor exhibition halls

• The museum consists of a permanent exhibition hall, a special exhibition hall, and a studio gallery.
• In the permanent exhibition hall, you can see birch forest-themed photographic works by the museum director and photographer Won Jong-ho.
• In the special exhibition hall, you can also enjoy invited exhibitions by various artists as well as works by emerging new artists.

Studio gallery

• After viewing the exhibitions, you can relax at the gallery cafe with drinks or desserts, and browse books, art goods, and souvenir postcards.

Birch garden and walking paths

• All of the museum buildings are set apart from one another, so you can move along the walking paths and naturally enjoy the outdoor garden and clusters of birch trees.

• The surrounding roads are rural, and the access road to the museum is somewhat narrow, so please keep that in mind if you are driving.
• There is also a pension on the museum grounds where overnight stays are possible in Finnish-style wooden houses, so you can stay nearby for a day and enjoy the forest atmosphere and a barbecue party.
