Sewoon Sangga is Korea's first mixed-use residential and commercial building and a massive shopping complex located in Jongno-gu, Seoul. Its name means "let the energy of the world gather here," and it was completed in 1968. Stretching for about 1 kilometer, it runs from Jongno 3-ga to Toegye-ro 3-ga.

The history of Sewoon Sangga

Sewoon Sangga is a place that holds traces of Korea's urban development history. In 1945, this area was cleared into open land by Japan in preparation for Allied bombing. After the Korean War, displaced residents who had lost their homes built shacks here and lived in them. Then, in 1966, it was designated as Korea's first downtown redevelopment project site, and architect Kim Swoo-geun designed the complex, which opened as Sewoon Sangga in 1968.

Sewoon Sangga originally consisted of eight shopping buildings, including Hyundai Shopping Center, Sewoon Sangga Building Ga-dong, Cheonggye Shopping Center, Daelim Shopping Center, Sampoong Shopping Center, Pungjeon Hotel, Shinseong Shopping Center, and Jinyang Shopping Center. Some of these have since been redeveloped.

What makes Sewoon Sangga unique

Building structure

• Four floors in total: Each floor has a variety of electronics shops and parts stores.
• Third-floor artificial deck: A pedestrian-only passageway designed with complete separation between pedestrians and vehicles.
• Central courtyard: The "garden at the center" inside the fifth floor is where architect Kim Swoo-geun's vision is most clearly shown.
• Ninth-floor rooftop park: You can enjoy wonderful views stretching from Bugaksan to Namsan.

• Sewoon Electronics Museum: A place that sheds new light on the Cheonggyecheon culture around Sewoon Sangga.
• Sewoon Tech Book Lounge: Kids can explore a variety of books related to electronics.
• Sebot: You can meet a robot whose name combines "Se" from Sewoon and "bot" from robot.

Sewoon Sangga is Korea's first comprehensive electronics market and an electronics mall with 40 years of tradition. As the heart of Seoul's downtown electronics industry district, it handles a wide range of electronic products, including electrical and electronic parts, computer semiconductors, and audio equipment. What makes it even more special is that major Korean companies such as TG Sambo Computer, Hangul and Computer, and Commax got their start here.

Recently, it has been transformed through an urban regeneration project, becoming an even more interesting place for kids.
