Located at 50 Buheung-ro 1423beon-gil, Yangju-si, Gyeonggi-do, Yangju Hyanggyo is a Confucian educational institution with more than 600 years of history. It is a special outing spot where you and your child can experience tradition and nature in person.

What is Yangju Hyanggyo?

• Yangju Hyanggyo is a local educational institution founded in 1401, during the first year of King Taejong of the Joseon Dynasty. In the past, Confucian scholars studied classical texts here and learned the etiquette of daily life.
• In addition to education, the hyanggyo has carried on Confucian culture by holding memorial rites for respected sages.
• It was damaged and lost several times through the Imjin War and the Korean War, but it was restored through the efforts of local residents and has preserved its appearance to this day.

Main buildings and layout

• Myeongnyundang: The lecture hall where students studied, and the central building of the hyanggyo.
• Daeseongjeon: A ritual space where memorial tablets for Confucius and other great Confucian scholars are enshrined.
• Oesammun and Naesammun: Traditional gates full of historic style. The outer gate is especially striking for its taegeuk pattern and red-spiked gate.
• A 450-year-old protected zelkova tree: A large zelkova tree stands in front of the hyanggyo, giving families a chance to experience old and enduring nature together.
