Historical background and meaning

• In 1592, at the height of the Imjin War, more than 700 civilian militia fighters and monk soldiers, including Jo Heon, a militia commander, and Great Master Yeonggyu, a monk army commander, fought against Japanese forces in the Battle of Geumsan and were all gloriously killed in action.
• After the battle, disciples of Jo Heon gathered the remains of the fallen and created a large burial mound, which came to be called Chilbaeguichong, meaning the Tomb of the 700.
• Chilbaeguichong is a place that honors the patriotism and spirit of sacrifice of those who gave their lives for the nation and the people.
• At the shrine called Jongyongsa, memorial rites are held every year to honor their spirits.
