Onneung, a beautiful historic walking path where Queen Dangyeong's story still lives on

Located at 13-2 Ilyeong-ri, Jangheung-myeon, Yangju-si, Gyeonggi-do, Onneung is the tomb of Queen Dangyeong of the Sin clan, the first queen consort of King Jungjong, the 11th king of the Joseon Dynasty. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, this peaceful and charming place lets you experience both the history of the Joseon royal tombs and the beauty of nature at the same time. It is an ideal spot to learn old stories with your kids while enjoying the outdoors.

History and features of Onneung

• Onneung is the tomb of Queen Dangyeong, who lived a tragic life after being deposed just 7 days after her coronation following the 1506 coup that placed King Jungjong on the throne. Later, in 1739, the 15th year of King Yeongjo's reign, she was restored in status and her tomb was elevated to a royal tomb, receiving the name Onneung.
• Onneung has a simple tomb form without folding screen stones or rail stones, and it is decorated with one pair of stone sheep and stone tigers around it. This is the proper style for a queen's tomb.
• At the entrance, you will find a hanok-style ritual house and a red-spiked gate, along with the typical structures of a royal tomb such as the T-shaped shrine, memorial stele pavilion, lantern stone, and watchman stones.
• It is one of the 40 Joseon royal tombs inscribed as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site in 2009, and it is a precious cultural heritage site managed by the state.

   With thick trees, grassy lawns, and well-maintained walking paths surrounding the tomb area, this is a wonderful place for kids to move around and experience nature. It is not crowded, so the atmosphere is quiet and comfortable.

   At the entrance, you will find insect-repelling fans and a resting area, helping your kids visit more comfortably.

   If you would like, you can also listen to an on-site cultural guide, making this a lively educational experience where children can understand the history more easily through storytelling.

Things to know before you visit

• The walking path is მშვიდ and mostly flat, so even strollers and young children can get around without difficulty.
• If you visit in spring or autumn, you can fully enjoy both the fresh natural scenery and the calm beauty of the royal tomb.
• There may be many bugs in summer, so it is a good idea to bring mosquito repellent if needed.
