Seokguram, a mysterious cultural heritage site to visit with your kids

What kind of place is Seokguram?

• Seokguram is one of Korea's most representative cultural heritage sites, located halfway up Tohamsan Mountain in Gyeongju, Gyeongsangbuk-do. Construction began in the 8th century during the Unified Silla period by Kim Daeseong, and it was completed about 20 years later. Its original name was Seokbulsa.
• Seokguram is a hermitage affiliated with Bulguksa Temple of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism, and it is the world's only artificial stone grotto made by carefully shaping granite as a single hermitage.
• It was designated National Treasure No. 24 in 1962, and in 1995 it was inscribed as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site, gaining recognition for its value around the world.

What makes it special?

• The inside of Seokguram is not a natural cave. It is an artificial grotto made by precisely assembling individually cut pieces of granite.
• At the center stands a majestic Buddha statue measuring 3.5 m, surrounded by 39 delicate Buddhist figures including bodhisattvas, disciples, and the Four Heavenly Kings.
• It is a place where Silla-era expertise in architecture, sculpture, mathematics, science, and art came together, and along with Bulguksa Temple, it is a representative historic site expressing the Buddhist ideal world.

   • A spacious parking lot is available, making it convenient for family visits.
   • Parking fees are about 2,000 won for small vehicles and 4,000 won for large vehicles. Low-emission vehicles may receive a 50% discount.

4. Things to keep in mind

   • Photography inside the grotto is not allowed for preservation reasons.
   • There is no restroom right next to Seokguram, so it is best to use the restroom near the parking lot in advance.
   • Since the route involves stairs and mountain paths, comfortable shoes are recommended.

5. Nearby information

   • There are experiences such as the Seokguram Bell, also called Tongildaejong, and a souvenir shop, so you can enjoy various activities after your walk.
