What is Wonju Gangwon Gamyeong?

Wonju Gangwon Gamyeong was the government office, or provincial governor's office, that served as the administrative and political center of Gangwon Province during the Joseon Dynasty. It was established in 1395, the 4th year of King Taejo's reign, and for about 500 years it governed the entire Gangwon region. Thanks to its location close to Hanyang, Wonju prospered as the center of Gangwon Province, and even the name Gangwon comes from Gangneung and Wonju.

Today, Wonju Gangwon Gamyeong is designated as Historic Site No. 439, a national heritage site, as of 2002. With its government buildings, historic remains, and restored gardens well preserved, it offers families a special chance to step back into the past.

Main highlights

1. Seonhwadang
   • This was the main office building where the provincial governor officially carried out duties, and it is the only Seonhwadang among all provincial offices nationwide that remains in its original location.
2. Pojeongnu
   • This pavilion served as the main gate of the provincial office, and it is the point where your visit into Gangwon Gamyeong truly begins.
3. Rear garden area
   • With traditional pavilions such as Bongnaegak, Gwanpunggak, and Joojung alongside a pond, this is a beautiful place to stroll and imagine the governors of the past resting here and reciting poetry.
4. Archive hall
   • Here you can see various artifacts from Gangwon Gamyeong, miniature models, a list of past governors, and related documents and tools.
5. Experience area
   • There is a traditional play area where you and your kids can enjoy old games such as tuho.

Visitor information and tips

• Hours: Admission is free, and the site is open from 9 AM to 10 PM. You can also rent hanbok for free from 11 AM to 5 PM.
• Accessibility: It is close to the Wonju Intercity Bus Terminal, making it easy to reach by public transportation.
• Facility guidance: Smoking, drinking alcohol, pets, and bicycles are not allowed, helping maintain a pleasant visit environment.
• Things to see: Restored historic government buildings, traditional markets on both sides, views of the rear garden, exhibits in the archive hall, and heritage information panels
• Events: Programs with guided explanations and hands-on activities are available through docent reservations, and the Gangwon Gamyeong Festival is also held every October.
• Parking: You will need to use nearby public street parking.
