A Historic Journey to Miryang Hyanggyo with Your Kids

What kind of place is Miryang Hyanggyo?

Miryang Hyanggyo is a traditional Confucian educational institution located in Gyodong, Miryang-si, Gyeongsangnam-do, at the foot of Okgyo Mountain. It is known to have been founded in 1398, the 7th year of King Taejo of Joseon, and is considered one of the three major hyanggyo schools in the Yeongnam region during the Joseon Dynasty, making it a landmark of great historical and cultural value. Daeseongjeon harmoniously reflects architectural styles from the 17th and 19th centuries, giving it significant value in architectural history as well.

  • Myeongnyundang
This was the lecture hall where students studied in the past. It was a place where they learned filial piety, benevolence, etiquette, and the foundations of Confucianism, allowing you to feel the atmosphere of traditional education.

  • Punghwaru
This two story pavilion serves as the main gate of the hyanggyo. From here, you can take in a full view of the hyanggyo and the surrounding scenery.

  • Dongjae, Seojae, Dongmu, and Seomu
These spaces include lodgings where students and instructors stayed, as well as areas used to prepare for memorial rites, and together they let you appreciate the beauty of traditional hanok architecture.
