What kind of place is Seoul Munmyo?

Seoul Munmyo is a shrine located inside Sungkyunkwan, the highest national educational institution of the Joseon Dynasty. It is a historic place where memorial tablets for Confucius, his disciples, and many Confucian scholars from Korea and China were enshrined and where ancestral rites were held. It was first established in 1398 during the reign of King Taejo of Joseon, and it has continued to the present day through several reconstructions and repairs. This site served both educational and ceremonial roles, and it holds great value in the history of Korean Confucianism and architecture.

Main buildings at Seoul Munmyo

• Daeseongjeon: The central building where the memorial tablets of Confucius and various Confucian scholars are enshrined. It is the most important space in Munmyo.
• Dongmu and Seomu: Buildings on either side of Daeseongjeon where the memorial tablets of Confucius's disciples and other Confucian scholars are kept.
• Sammun Sinsammun: The main gate of Munmyo, which plays an important role in ceremonial rites.
• Bigak: A building used to house commemorative monuments and stone steles.
• Myeongnyundang: An educational space located just behind, where Sungkyunkwan students studied in the past.

These buildings are arranged in the traditional style of front shrine and rear learning space, meaning the ceremonial area is in front and the academic area is behind. This unique layout lets you and your child see and experience traditional architecture up close.

Historical significance of Seoul Munmyo

• Seoul Munmyo served for a long time as a center of Korean Confucian education and spirit.

• Location: Inside Sungkyunkwan University, 25-1 Sungkyunkwan-ro, Jongno-gu, Seoul.
• Public transportation: About a 10 minute walk from Exit 4 of Hyehwa Station on Line 4.
• Notes for visitors: Since it is located inside an educational institution where past and present coexist, visitors should be respectful. Entry to some buildings may be restricted. Viewing may not be possible during ancestral rites or special events.
