Parenting Tips for Gimpo Munsusan
- The recommended route for children starts at the Munsusan Forest Bathing Area and follows Parking Lot -> Observatory -> Hongyemun Gate -> Jungbong Rest Area -> Summit (Jangdae) -> return to the starting point. It takes approximately 2 hours 30 minutes to 3 hours round trip at the pace of younger elementary school children.
- The route toward the North Gate has steep slopes and many rocky ridges, which can be slippery on the way down. If hiking with children, a round trip along the ridge trail toward the forest bathing area is recommended.
- There are no restrooms at all on the mountain, so be sure to use the restroom at the parking lot entrance before setting out.
- Give children a mission to look for the fortress's Hongyemun Gate and gunports while learning about the history of the French Campaign of 1866, and they can hike energetically without getting bored.
- Dry sandy soil can be slippery on the descent, so make sure children wear trekking shoes or sneakers with deep tread rather than regular shoes.
- Many sections along the outside of the fortress ridge trail are steep drop-offs, so guardians need to make sure children do not dangerously climb onto the fortress walls.
- For breaks along the way, bring simple snacks such as mini chocolate bars, jelly, and cherry tomatoes that are easy to eat in one bite. They can give children a big boost at each challenging point.
- On autumn dawns or mornings after rain, when there is a large temperature difference between day and night, you can enjoy one of Gimpo's finest views, with a sea of clouds and a red sunrise spreading below.
- After descending, enjoy tofu dishes or acorn jelly rice soup in Seongdong-ri, then combine your visit with Gimpo International Sculpture Park or Aegibong Peace Ecological Park, both 10 minutes away by car, for a fulfilling weekend day trip.
